Freehand Los Angeles

Book

The Freehand Los Angeles is a one-of-a-kind, boutique hotel with a rich history, featuring premium hotel rooms and shared accommodations with interiors designed by Roman & Williams.

Built in 1924, the Renaissance Revival-style Commercial Exchange Building was designed by architects Walker & Eisen. The coveted office building was the first in the area built to the maximum height limits of the time and housed the headquarters for the Owl Drug Company, as well as offices for dentists and the Tarzan author, Edgar Rice Burroughs.

During its refurbishment, started in 2014, the project team uncovered a host of long-hidden features, including the original wooden transom and at least one storefront dating from the 1930s. They meticulously removed decades of old paint and incompatible flooring, revealing an original Owl Drug Company tile mosaic, now visible in the dining room. They reconstructed missing pieces based on remnants and photographs, and they restored the original neon blade sign.  Today the building is designated as a Los Angeles Historic-Cultural Landmark.

The Lobby is a hub of activity housing the 24-hour reception, the lobby bar, Rudolph’s snack bar and Cafe Integral, serving coffee in the mornings.  It is also home to ‘The Exchange Restaurant’ offering multi-cultural flavors of urban LA with an Israeli twist.

‘Broken Shaker’ is the “pièce de résistance” here, located on the rooftop along with a pool and stunning views of the city skyline.  Winner of ‘Tales of the Cocktail’s Best American Hotel Bar’ award and a James Beard Award finalist, Broken Shaker serves delicious cocktails, infused with homemade elixirs and exotic ingredients, as well as light bites that bring the flavors of the beach to the center of the city.

Private rooms offer a flat-screen 49″ cable TV and a work desk. Many offer city views and seats by the window.

Shared rooms offer bunk beds with sheets, a shared en-suite bathroom, and a locker(locks not provided).
