Official Campsite – Souter Lighthouse
BookPitch your tent or park your motorhome at the Official Great North Run Campsite, with stunning views of the North Sea and the National Trust Souter Lighthouse.
Souter Lighthouse is a local icon and stands proud on the coastline midway between the Tyne and the Wear. It was the world’s first lighthouse designed to be lit by electricity, built in 1871 and now houses displays exploring its working history. Pay a visit to the lighthouse and discover why it was seen as ‘a marvel of its age’. Inside, you can learn about the life of a lighthouse keeper and discover both a lost village and a lost industry. If you have a head for heights, climb the 76 steps to the top of the tower – you’ll be rewarded with an amazing view.
Stretching north from the lighthouse towards the Great North Run finish line is The Leas – 2½ miles of magnesian limestone cliffs, wave-cut foreshore and coastal grassland. Enjoy a cliff-top walk along to Gypsy Green Stadium, or check out the old, crank-working cliff lift at the nearby Marsden Grotto, which will bring you down through the rock to their famous cave restaurant with access to the beachfront.
The on-site Lighthouse Café serves drinks, snacks and light meals and has indoor and outdoor seating available.
